Chapter 2

"Cye, are they back yet?" Sage asked in concern as Cye sadly shook his head.

"Sorry love. I’m just as worried about Kento as you are about Ryo and Rowen, but you have to wait, and you know that." Carefully, Sage nodded, suddenly bursting into a fit of ragged coughs. Cye quickly patted the boy’s back, trying to slowly rub the boy into a calm serenity.

"Thanks Cye." He muttered as the British boy grinned.

You’re welcome. I promised Ryo that I’d take care of you, so that is what I’ll do." Sage smiled weakly.

"I think you mean because you didn’t trust Mia with me." Cye’s face flushed.

"Well, love, you are extremely sick. I think that maybe we should take you to the hos..."

"No!" Sage exclaimed, once again bursting into a set of coughs.

"Love, I really don’t think that you have a say in it." Sage shook his head.

"I’ll only go if Ryo tells me too. No one else. Now let me get out of bed and go see where they are." Sage rose to his feet and stumbled back against Cye.

"You know that Ryo would kill me if I were to let you leave the bed."

"But what about Rowen’s health? He may be hurt and dying in the corner of a deep ditch, having just been beaten and gang raped and he needs our help and he needs me to heal him and..."

"Sage, you’re over analyzing things! Rowen is fine! And the others will bring him back and you will realize that all that you have been thinking has happened is clearly wrong and that Rowen is perfectly fine!"

"But..."

"Hush..." Cye stated, placing a gentle finger over Sage’s lips. The blonde hung his head in anger but said nothing. He was far too tired to protest.

"Get some rest Sage. You’ll never heal unless you get to sleep and stop worrying about the others." Sage nodded in understanding, even though he truly didn’t want to. He wanted his Ryo, and his best friend back, and now.

"Cye, just promise me that as soon as they get back, you’ll tell me, alright?" Cye nodded, watching as the blonde’s eyes fluttered shut. The sleeping medicine should have taken an effect faster, but he couldn’t be picky. As long as Sage was asleep, everything was well. Cye smiled as he noted the soft rise and fall of the blonde’s chest, slightly irregular but as was to be expected of someone so ill. Carefully he pulled the cover over the blonde’s chest, as he exited the room with a sigh. Sitting at the kitchen table, he awaited the return of his own lover and comrades.

"He doesn’t like to be hurt." The small boy stated as Sage wearily opened his eyes, the pain and disorientation of his illness no longer befalling him.

"What do you mean?" Sage asked the amazingly familiar child, who sighed.

"I said he doesn’t like to be hurt Sage. As in Rowen. Me!" Sage looked at the boy and suddenly figured everything out. He was staring down at a younger version of Rowen.

"Well, no one likes to be hurt." Sage pointed out as the child sighed, his bright blue eyes looking Sage up and down.

"Duh. And you call yourself wisdom..." The boy muttered as Sage laughed.

"You remind me so much of him." The blonde boy stated to the young child, as the boy rolled his eyes.

"Well duh, seeing as I am him! Or at least, I was. When he was a child anyways. I guess we should start there."

"Huh?" Sage asked in confusion as the boy shook his head.

"Ok, let’s get this straight. I am Touma. The version of me that you know will be Rowen, ok? I suppose that would make your incompetence tolerant..." The young boy stated as Sage nodded. Rowen, always talking down on the less fortunate brained ones.

"Ok, as if you haven’t figured it out yet, and I’m suspecting you have because you’re wisdom, this is a dream. A dream that is a recollection of all your friend’s life. From his childhood to now, got it? Now don’t forget that you can’t do anything, seeing as you’re seeing the past. Trying to stop anything will result in you being ignored by Rowen and yelled at by me." Sage nodded doubtfully, not sure if he wanted to know what was going to happen next. Touma smiled brightly at him, in the cutest way imaginable, little dimples forming on his young face. Sage couldn’t help but smile gently back at the boy.

"Oh, and you’re not going to like this, got it?" Sage took a deep breath and nodded. He was ready for anything at the moment. It was then that the scenery around him shifted, and instead of the black void he and Touma has been standing in, it was that of a small, cramped living room, a snoring man resting on the couch, a beer bottle hanging loosely in his hands. Peering carefully into the room was Touma’s.... no, Rowen’s head, fear evident in his every movement.

Carefully he walked over to the man, peering over the man’s stomach to look at his face. Suspecting that the coast was clear, the small boy reached over and prepared to remove the bottle from the man’s hand when his wrist was grabbed by a steel grip and menacing blue eyes flashed open, still glazed over slightly. The boy gasped in terror and froze in place, hoping that maybe, just maybe, the man was still asleep. Yet luck was not on his side today, as he was lifted into the air by his wrist, and with a yelp of pain, was flung to the side of the room, his head smashing into the wall as darkness filled his mind.

"Rowen!" sage cried out as Touma sighed.

"I told you not to say anything you nitwit. You know it isn’t going to help." The child stated as Sage’s heart raced. This couldn’t be real. Rowen’s father wasn’t some drunk that liked to fling his four-year-old son across the room and into the wall! This was some grand mistake. It was just a terrible dream. That was all. Any minute now he’d wake up, and Rowen would be there in the bed next to his, Ryo holding onto him to help wake him from this nightmare.

"Don’t even try. This is real. All of it." Touma stated as Sage shuddered.

"Please say there’s no more. I... I don’t want to see anymore." Sage whimpered, trying to shake the image from his mind. The cracking from Rowen’s tawny body as he made contact with the wall, the cry of distress.... Sage trembled in place.

"Well, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but when I was sent, it was for two times a night. Hey, don’t look at me. I’m just a figment of the past; I was just recreated by someone to talk to you in your dreams. I just follow orders here." Sage took a deep breath, breathing out slowly and raggedly.

"Ok, you ready for the next one?" Touma asked as Sage nodded slightly, hoping that this time it wouldn’t be so nauseating.

This time it was of a couple, a tall, curly haired woman was standing and arguing with the man that Sage had seen before.

"You keep him! Do you think that I can take a five-year-old boy around the world with me? At least you’re in one place!" The man growled.

"I don’t want to little brat! Just because he’s some little super genius, he thinks that he can do anything! I am not going to father a good for nothing little brat!"

"He’s your son!"

"You had him! I never wanted him!"

"And you think I did? I had to go through 7 months of labor, only to have him premature and nearly die because you couldn’t even buy the right kind of condoms!"

"Oh, and who’s fault was it that they forgot to use birth control?"

"Well, dear, with your drinking I was too busy thinking of something else other then taking the pill!" She yelled, as the small boy hiding behind the couch winced, tears streaming down his young face. Finally, he made his appearance, rising to his feet to the surprise of both parents who had thought their son long asleep.

"Rowen, what are you doing up?" He mother demanded as the boy’s lower lip trembled.

"I... I want you and papa to get the divorce and don’t worry about me. I’ll be ok. And... and please stop fighting. I didn’t mean to cause you so much trouble. I... I didn’t mean to be born." He whispered, as his mother sighed.

"Rowen, go back to bed. This doesn’t concern you." She stated as the boy nodded and scampered off to his room. Quickly he shut the door and climbed into his bed, pulling his one and only stuffed animal to his chest and sobbing.

"I...I didn’t mean for mama and papa to get mad because of me. I.... I just want them to be happy." He cried, burying his head into the coarse plush of his worn teddy bear.

"I just wanna be happy..." He murmured as he closed his eyes, pulling the cover over his head and trying to find a peaceful sleep.

Sage cried. He couldn’t take this. He couldn’t take his friend in so much pain. So much happening to such a young child.

"I’m sorry I had to show you that." Touma stated as Sage continued crying, sliding to the floor and digging his face in his hands.

"Umm... Now that I’m done you can wake up. But I must warn you, I’ll be back to tell you more." Touma stated as he disappeared from sight leaving Sage along in the dark.

Quickly Sage’s eyes opened as he jerked up in his sleep, crying out.

"Woah, love, it’s alright. It was just a dream." Sage’s lavender eyes looked into tiger blue, as he sighed in relief.

"Ryo..." He muttered, wrapping his arms around his lover despite his tired limbs protest. Ryo smiled softly as he pulled Sage’s head to his chest, running his hand through the damp locks.

"Calm down Blondie, it was just a dream." Sage shook his head rapidly.

"It wasn’t! It was real... all real..." Ryo sighed.

"No it wasn’t. I just seemed real." Sage shook his head again, but Ryo just patted his back.

"I know that bad dreams can seem real, but they aren’t." Sage said nothing as he continued crying on his lover’s chest.

"But... Wait. Did you find Rowen? Where is he? Where is Rowen?" Sage demanded as Ryo shook his head.

"Sorry... We looked everywhere, and then we found him at the range. Well, not him, but his arrows and bow were there, scattered around, some having even been stepped on and broken. We’re not really sure what happened to him. He’s probably fine though. So please don’t get all worried." Ryo stated, but his urging came to late as he realized that Sage was sobbing even harder now, tears streaming down his face in torrents.

"He’s hurt.... He’s in pain. His life..." Sage continued sobbing, as Ryo sighed. There was nothing left for him to do to the blonde but try to comfort him from this odd funk he had gone into.

~~/~~/~~/~~/~~

"You... You made Sage sick? You used your messed up little Warlords powers to screw up Sage’s health? Didn’t you even know what this would do to him?" Rowen demanded from within his shackles, glaring defiantly at his captors.

"Aww... worrying about your little crush. How sweet."

"Go to hell! Make him ok again! Stop making him sick and crap!" Cale laughed.

"Aww, but it’s my calling in life to make Halo’s life a living hell. So why not stricken him, and then take his best friend?"

"If you wanted to hurt him, you would have taken Ryo." Cale rolled his eyes.

"Yeah, we’re really going to go after flame-boy and his armor of Inferno. That would be smart. And anyways, this way he gets tortured more!" Rowen growled deep in his throat.

"And how would that be?" Cale laughed.

"Aww, if I told you that would ruin the fun now wouldn’t it?" Rowen shook his head.

"Actually no. It would simply give me another reason to kick your ass in when I get out of here." It was Dais’s turn to laugh, as he looked at the Ronin from where he hung.

"If anyone’s going to be doing something with someone else’s ass it’s not going to be you." He stated as Rowen rolled his eyes.

"Is that supposed to be a threat?" He asked as Cale smiled.

"Yes. And soon you shall learn that." Rowen watched as a smile crept over the faces of both present Warlords. A harsh enough look to bring chills to his spine.

"You shall learn your place Strata. And believe me, you will."
