A peasant limped past the samurai guards. His hood covered his face and he carried a gnarled staff in one hand. The guards sneered at the obviously blind beggar as he passed, but the peasant ignored them. He limped through the village gate and into the shadows. Only then did he lift his blue eyes. He scanned the street before looking to the wall. There, hidden from the untrained eye, was one of his most trusted genin waiting. He stood just below where the man crouched on top of the wall and waited. Almost instantly a bundle fell to the ground beside him. Ryo quickly shrugged out of his disguise and changed quickly changed into his shinobi shozoko. After tying on his facemask, he tossed up his peasant disguise and gave the signal. The genin nodded and vanished soundlessly. The invasion had begun.

Date Seiji stood at the castle gate, yawning. His mother had put him on sentry duty for tonight, but the hours had passed uneventfully. The night was beautiful, though. The moon shone with a silver light that accented the rosy glow coming from the city.

Glow?

A shout was raised but Seiji barely heard. He drew his sword and faced the figure that was walking toward him.

His clothing was fuller in some places to hide the silhouette. Seiji recognized the outfit immediately: ninja. The backdrop of the burning city made him seem even more menacing as he strode slowly up the path toward him. It was unlike ninja to be so bold. He was obviously looking for a fight. Or perhaps the ninja was a woman. He had heard of women being ninja, and if that were the case he could surely charm her into reconsidering. ‘Stop it, Seiji,’ he scolded himself. The ninja stopped a few feet away and regarded him with interest.

Ryo had to admit he was shocked. He’d never seen a blonde Japanese before. He looked about his age, perhaps a year older. But the thing that drew Ryo’s attention most was the samurai’s intense gray eyes.

"What is your business here?" he challenged, raising his sword.

He couldn’t see his face, but Seiji could tell by his eyes that the ninja was smirking.

"My business here is none of yours. Now out of the way."

The ninja¾ male by the voice¾ was young, probably a few years older than himself. But Seiji did not move. "You will have to fight me first."

Ryo laughed. Who did this guy think he was? Either he was very brave or very stupid. "Very well," he said, drawing his own weapon.

Seiji readied himself for the battle, trying not to think about how ninja poisoned their blades.

"I don’t have to fight you, you know," the ninja was saying casually, letting the light of the fire reflect off the blade of his sword. "You can just let me by and no one would be the wiser." His blue eyes sparkled mockingly.

"And disgrace my lord’s house?!" Seiji fumed, launching himself at his opponent.

Ryo blocked the attack easily. He had gotten under this one’s skin better than any poison.

"Cowardly scum."

"Iyé, samurai-sama," Ryo corrected, pushing the other away. "Only by your code am I a coward."

"Oh, pardon me," the samurai said, his voice dripping sarcasm. "It takes a courageous soul to sneak into a lord’s castle in the dark of night!"

Ryo easily dodged and blocked the various assaults aimed at him, doing more of the former than the latter. His opponent was attacking in anger, making his moves all the more predictable. Suddenly, the samurai brought his sword up the side of Ryo’s face. He drew back, his hand going to his head instantly. The pain was unbearable, though the wound was not deep. Ryo looked at his hand. Blood. A lot of blood. He could feel his life fluid running down his cheek and neck. Looking beyond his hand, he saw a small black cloth lying on the ground at his feet. The significance of the cloth hit him abruptly.

Seiji stared in shock at his opponent. His black hair was long, reaching just below his shoulders. Somehow, his dark hair only helped to accent his startling blue eyes. Blue eyes that now regarded him with malice.

"Now we end this."

The ninja attacked and Seiji barely had time to block the blow aimed at his head before he received a quick kick in his stomach. He doubled over in pain and dropped to his knees. "Damn...you," he muttered through clenched teeth.

"Hai. And damn you for challenging me in the first place."

The only thing Seiji knew next was darkness.

Ooooo... don’t you just hate cliffhangers? *evil grin* Chapter 2 coming soon!
